Training: Introduction to Condition Based Maintenance (CBM)

This intensive two-day training program provides qualified engineers with a comprehensive introduction to Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) strategies and the full spectrum of Condition Monitoring (CM) techniques. Designed as a foundational step toward ISO 18436-2 certification, the course equips participants with the knowledge and context necessary to begin their journey into predictive maintenance and reliability engineering.

Through a combination of presentations, real-world case studies, interactive discussions, and live demonstrations, attendees will gain a solid grounding in the principles, applications, and limitations of key CM technologies.

The training also explains how these techniques integrate into a successful CBM program and broader asset management strategy.

Key topics include:

  • Principles of Condition Based Maintenance and Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM)
  • Overview of ISO 18436 standards and certification framework
  • Key Condition Monitoring techniques:
    • Vibration Analysis
    • Ultrasound Monitoring
    • Infrared Thermography
    • Lubricant and Wear Debris Analysis
    • Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA)
    • Acoustic Emissions and Other Emerging Technologies
  • Data interpretation and diagnostic basics
  • Selecting the right technique for the right asset
  • Integrating CM into maintenance strategies and digital systems
  • Introduction to reporting, alarms, and trending
  • Common pitfalls and success factors in CBM implementation

Practical Elements:

Hands-on experience is important, especially for foundation level.  CBMP will supply equipment including;

Training / Simulator rig to demonstrate typical faults on bearings, gears and rotors

Wired and wireless Vibration data collection devices

A range of Infrared cameras

Electrical fault simulation board (Infrared & Ultrasound)

Ultrasound detection devices

Leak detection simulation board (Ultrasound)

Who should attend:
This course is ideal for maintenance, reliability, and mechanical/electrical engineers who are new to CBM or looking to formalise their knowledge as a foundation for further technical training under ISO 18436-2 disciplines.

Outcome:
Participants will leave with a broad understanding of condition monitoring tools, techniques, and their role in a proactive maintenance culture. The course provides a stepping stone for more advanced certification in individual techniques and supports more informed decisions on maintenance strategy implementation.
